Nature is an endless source of inspiration and visual stimulation. See the land with new eyes as you hike and draw on City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks (OSMP) trails with a view of the famous Flatirons. Create a closer connection to place by responding to the natural phenomena you'll learn about and observe along the way. Explore a variety of drawing media and techniques and apply the basic visual elements of art: line, shape, space, light, color, and texture. Naturalist Suzanne Michot will guide participants along the trails, interpreting aspects of the natural world that surround us and give us inspiration. She will point out interesting natural features encountered on the hike and discuss some of the flora, wildlife, geology and history of the area.

Lisa Michot, artist and teacher, will provide art instruction. No art experience is necessary to take this class.

Participants should bring their own supplies such as a sketchbook or loose drawing paper, drawing pencils, color pencils, and something to sit on while drawing. Meet at the Chautauqua Dining Hall, 900 Baseline Road in Boulder. The hike is approximately 2.5 miles round trip with a 500 foot elevation gain. Wear sturdy tennis shoes or boots and bring water.

Enhance your weekend by taking an invigorating hike to Woods Quarry! Follow naturalist Suzanne Michot to one of the historic Lyons sandstone quarries within the City of Boulder Open Space Mountain Parks. Find out about this unique place and the interesting plants and animals of the area! You will also learn the history and geology of the quarry. The hike is approximately 3 miles round trip with a 700 foot elevation gain. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring rain gear and a snack.

Sandstone Ranch, 3001 Sandstone Drive (east side of park) or 2525 Zlaten Dr (west side of park), is currently the only approved public park location to launch model rockets. Call 303-774-4364 or email sandstone.ranch@longmontcolorado.gov if you need assistance with the registration process. Include the launch date and time with your request.
